Grantham Leaves Because of Bobo

I'm going to go out on a limb here and predict that this is Todd Grantham's last year in Athens unless we get a real offensive coordinator and special teams coach to cover his back.

  2. A moron being called out by gutless anons. That hurts.

    ReplyDelete
  3. Are you people actually defending Bobo? The guy is to Offensive Coordinators what Ray Goff was to head coaches.

    ReplyDelete
  4. All coaches (including Bobo) had this team ready to play tonight. We left too many points out on the field in the first half. Bobo got too conservative in the second half and the "D" quit on TG. This one isn't on the coaches, team let the spotlight get to 'em. Dumb blog post, your priveledges are stripped pal!

  5. I agree, Bobo gets hung up every time they make it to the red-zone. He calls 3rd and long run plays up the gut? He would make a great high school coach, not the caliber of OC we need though, he needs a break from coaching.

    ReplyDelete
  6. BOBO IS NO DIFFERNT THAN CMR. CMR WOULD MAKE THE SAME CALLS THAT'S WHY BOBO IS THERE.IF GRANTHAM LEAVES WE GO RIGHT BACK TO WHERE WE WERE A ROTTEN TEAM.wITH OUT GRANTHAM CMR WOULD HAVE BEEN FIRED.

  7. Anon, you mean I can't post on my own website any more? I wonder if Godaddy will refund my money for purchasing the domain name? Dang.

  8. Obvious post of a title just to get hits. I frequent this site for intelligent commentary and discussion. Mr. Coleman, you are better than this. UGA's stats on offense were impressive this year. A struggling game against one of the best defenses in NCAA does not mean that Bobo is a poor coordinator. Bobo and Grantham are not leaving anytime soon

    ReplyDelete
  9. If I cared about "hits", wouldn't I post news like most other blogs? Wouldn't I post more than a few times per month? I haven't checked the "hits" on here all season long. What I do is post my opinion, and if I was Grantham, I would confront Mark Richt about getting a damn OC that is consistent. And, I'm not talking about consistently predictable.

    ReplyDelete
  10. If you read my last 100 posts, the same theme has been evident. Bobo will always anger me when his calls suck. P.S. Don't let the ability to post anonymously turn you into a vag.

    ReplyDelete
  11. Before I respond, what are you looking for in a "real offensive coordinator?" I would like to hear your criteria.

    ReplyDelete
  12. I agree with you 100%about bobos play calling sucks and for those who think im just saying this because of 1 game think back 6 yearsand look at the decline in offense one word sums it up PREDICTABLE. Its run up the gut run up the gut then pass. I dare you to say it hasn't happened every game this year or go long on first and fallow by two runs up the gut

    ReplyDelete
  13. bobo had georgia up 21-0 in the first half. players have to excute make catches make blocks and make big time plays in big time games. georgia is young todd grantham isnt going anywhere. and georgia offense will only get better and if they can keep their junior players for their senior year and beat s. carolina and/or bama next year they will be back and maybe play for a sport for the bcs championship game.

    ReplyDelete
  14. And please do not get me wrong, I am open to an honest discussion. I want what is best for UGA football. If you would like another OC, who would you like to bring in and what style of offense would you like to run?

    ReplyDelete
  15. Tcj I will answer that the anti willie martinez of offense for starts

    ReplyDelete
  16. William,
Every fan I know from various teams complains about their OC. Even the spread offenses putting up 40 pts/game shout "our team is too predictable" if they do not win. Our offense put up very respectable numbers this year. I also get upset at some to the calls Bobo makes. But, Murry set a record for TD passes. The offense average over 420 yards per game. We made it to the SEC Championship game. What are you looking for in an OC?

    ReplyDelete
  17. Tcj I would like to stay with pro style o but just need a little more creativity on play calling. If bobo can do it by all means keep him if not get someone who can

    ReplyDelete
  18. William, I too like the pro style. The play action passing working from an effective running game was great this season. Tonight, I thought Bobo called a brilliant first half. Most of it was from shotgun and letting Murray get his feet set and throw. It was obvious early that we were not going to run the ball well. Two dropped TD passes were deadly. When Mitchell (who I love) dropped the TD, I turned to my wife in the Dome and said, "that might cost us the game." Can't blame that on Bobo in the first half.

    ReplyDelete
  19. Talent got most of those points I've watch every game 3 or 4 times (yes I record and rewatch breaking it down). Bobo makes some good calls just doesn't get a large enough lead before playing conservative. He is a great qb coach just not a good oc. Choosing to sttay with crowell is a joke is a another subject considering boo malcolm is a better running back

    ReplyDelete
  20. Now, 2nd half was a different story. I was VERY frustrated with the play calling in the 2nd half. I did not understand why we continued to attempt the run even when we were behind. Shotgun was working in 1st half. Thought we should have used it more.

    ReplyDelete
  21. Receivers were uncharacteristic tonight and almost looked bought off. Looked like the boyzee game to me. Looks like vegas has got there hands in it if I didn't know any better

    ReplyDelete
  22. I like Boo, if he holds on to the ball. I also rewatch the games and look at the play calling. Bobo is not perfect and I was calling for his head 2 years ago. BUT I do think he has gotten better. He is much more aggressive and will put the pedal down against weaker teams, unlike he (or Richt) would do in the past. I think he has developed into a solid OC.

I guess my biggest frustration with the "can Bobo regime" is who do you want to replace him?

    ReplyDelete
  23. William, were you in the Dome?

    ReplyDelete
  24. Second half reminded me of willie football aids martinez on o change it up and stick with it regardless of what happens. Why change what is working unless they can stop it is what I say

    ReplyDelete
  25. No not at the dome but glued to the tv every second like always with my dad been that way for years. I can't place who I would really want at oc. Well hell right now I would take anybody who has a more aggressive pasr than bobo.

    ReplyDelete
  26. William, in previous years, I have screamed at Bobo for not "sticking with what worked until they stopped it." In the past, I felt like Bobo was so reliant on 50/50 run/pass that he go away from what was working to remain the 50/50 balance. From the end of last year, to this year, I think Bobo has developed a more aggressive stance to "use what is working" against the defense. For example, throwing like crazy against Auburn and Tech this year.

    ReplyDelete
  27. Mr. Coleman,

In the morning, what say you? What are you looking for in an OC? and why are you so upset with Bobo?

    ReplyDelete
  28. What possesses a coach to do this? Up 10-0, then 10-7. We ran into brick walls up the middle on 1st & 2nd down, then served Murray's head on a platter on 3rd and long...4 possessions in a row. Why stop calling a great game because of a few dropped balls? Bobo gets into his on head or is just plain dumb. I'll post mire about what I look for in an OC later, but It's all over this blog for the past year.

    ReplyDelete
  29. As far as "who"? I would choose someone with a philosophy of adapting. Adapting to his personnel. Adapting to playmakers. Adapting to who's hot. Adapting to who's not. Adapting to the other team. Adapting to what they are giving me. Adapting to what they're not. Adapting to the real time game situation. Basically, Steve Spurrier. Anybody out there like him? I'd sure try to find him.

Someone who isn't stuck on I'm doing it "this" way because its what we do. Stick to things when they're working, fix them when they're not.

Someone with the manhood of Todd Grantham.

  30. I love how you bloggers get mad for people posting Anon...what info would you like? Name, address, phone #, SSN?

    ReplyDelete
  31. Bobo called a great game, especially first half. Isn't the real issue Murray, who had 3 turnovers again?

    ReplyDelete
  32. I totally agree with you Andy, Bobo is so predictable that other teams dont have to spend much time scouting or preparing for us. When the common fan can tell you what the plays are before they happen, i.e run up the middle X2 then play action(who are you fooling),what do you think a DC from the opposing team knows? This has been a problem for awhile now. We have had some great players come to UGA the past 10 years just look at the NFL but we do not get the most out of our top players. Bobo has a way of dumbing down our talent especially if we get the smallest of leads then its Bobo's trademark prevent offense.

  33. Mr. Georgia Football Returns

Haven't we already been threw this before ....with Brian Van Gorder??
Richt gets a big multi-million dollar contract extension and Van Gorder leaves....the the Dawg Nation has to endure a six year soul drift of losses to lesser programs and finishing outside the top twenty five two years running and listening to all the endless Mark Richt apologists!
Well its happening again!..............Richt gets a one million plus extension, pockets the cash and Granthem bolts for more money...and the cycle begins again with the Dawg Nation listening to all the Rhetor-Richt and the apologees for years while the search for a new defensive coordinator continues.......

I say the blame this time falls on President Michael Adams and the administrative board if this happens a second time....are you listening Mr. Bishop?

Get rid of Richt and keep Grantham..he turned the defense around in two years........Richt took six years which is unacceptable!! Granthem will stay for 3 million per year which is what Richt is making.

  34. Apparently the guy who wrote this blog can read minds and knows what other grown men are thinking. But I would like to know what the author of this blog is thinking when posting such pointless and goofy conjecture based on nothing but a half-ass understanding of football.

    ReplyDelete
  35. If I got "mad" about anons I wouldn't allow them to post. I control this site after all. The ignorance of anon is one of my favorite parts of writing UGABlog.

When I post on this blog, it is what I'm thinking. Opinions are funny things, kinda like a$$holes. We all got'em, and most stink pretty badly from what I'm told.

    ReplyDelete
  36. Bobo is far from being a good OC but he has demonstrated that he will open up the offense when he has confidence in the defense to bail us out of any potential mistakes. We had to play a near perfect game to beat this LSU team but dropped catches and fumbles by Murray not taking care of the ball are not part of a near perfect game. Our special teams are a joke. It's almost like we do the high-school , 10 minute/week post practice hurried walk-thru for our special teams prep. It's like it's an after thought. It is the antithesis of our defense. I'd rather give Grantham control of our punt/kickoff coverage. He has shown that he can teach the defense to maintain their lanes and focus on their responsibility - exactly what we need on our punt/kickoff coverage. Special teams put our defense in some really bad spots yesterday and eventually the defense will break, as they did, if you don't give them adequate time to recover from their last series. Having no running game due to cancer Crowell really limited our ability to prepare. We really need to sign 3 stud RBs this year.

  37. Anon, let's meet for a beer and talk football. That way we can see who knows more. Beer is on me. But, if you call me an idiot (TO MY FACE) one of us will get their hiney whipped. I live in Cumming by the way.

    ReplyDelete
  38. Andy - With a post like this, it's truly stunning you have your own blog.

What is it with all the morons going off on Bobo. This lose wasn't due to Bobo. He called a good game for the most part. This lose was due to the fact we played a team that will go undefeated and win the National Championship, because they're head and shoulders over everyone else and have proved it all season long.

Someone needs to start passing out CLUE cards to the delusional.

    ReplyDelete
  39. Calling all Anons,

Where have I said that we lost this game because of Bobo? I know why we lost. LSU was better than us. I've never denied that, not even before Saturday.

    ReplyDelete
  40. I'm saying that Mike Bobo called a GREAT game for a bit over a quarter, then went bonkers. It's a recurring theme.

    ReplyDelete
  41. Umm douche bag, what does the title to this blog post imply? Maybe it implies that Georgia loses games because of Bobo, so Grantham should leave. That is really bonafide brilliant logic.

No, I'm not the specific Anon you called out but just for kicks and giggles...what makes you think you know more about football than anyone else? I'm begging you to lay out your coaching resume. Seriously, have YOU EVER COACHED? And also, why are you so confident you could "whip someone's hiney"? Oh, wait, I just reread that and I see now, you don't clarify who would get their hiney whipped. I visit Cumming a lot and would love to take a shot at your punk ass if you'd like but you might want to narrow down the location a little. I can't just go door to door!!! But really, I have better things to do than threaten people behind a computer screen and you probably do to. If blogging and football give you this much angst...you might want to give up both of them!

But hey buck up little camper, when we win our bowl game, you can jump back on the Bulldawg bandwagon and maybe we won't need to fight! So take it from me (I'm probably quite a bit older than you), being a die hard dawg fan means loving them through the ups and downs. If you think firing a very productive coach is the direction we need to go in, then your life is going to be miserable. So again, I ask, what is your coaching resume? What makes you such and expert in hiring and firing practices in big boy football?

And last thing...I love how you and the Sports and Grits queers have teamed up in your thinking. That has to make you feel pretty confident about your football knowledge. Makes me think this beer you want to buy people would be at a gay bar. Not that there's anything wrong with that.

Hope you have a good day recruiting people to the anti-dawg sites. Talk to you soon.

    Hugs and kisses,
    Anon

  44. Andy-

I have a question for you. When you made an error in baseball or struckout, did you blame your coach? You said it yourself sometimes it does not matter about the x's and o's it's the JIMMY'S and JOE'S!! I would of loved to see you call plays against that LSU defense because the WING-T would not have cut it! You couldn't of played any of my teams because it sounds like it was everyones fault but your own. I will end with this....Do you respect Nick Saban?? If Nick Saban wanted an OC, would you want that person for the OC JOB at UGA?

    ReplyDelete
  45. Daniel, let me first just say thank you for asking legitimate questions. Now, I'll take a few seconds while I'm not on baby duty to give honest answers.

Baseball, while still a team sport, is much more individual oriented. Of course I only blamed myself any time I did not succeed, whether it was striking out, missing an open receiver, or even getting stuffed on a poorly designed option play. It's funny you bring up the baseball analogy because I often tell people that I enjoy coaching football more than baseball because a coach has a greater ability to affect the outcome on game day. In baseball, a coach only has so much control on situations, whereas in football, a coach's call can make or break the outcome of each possession.

I did a poor job of fully explaining my qualms with Bobo's play calling on this particular blog because I forget that all readers haven't read all of my posts on UGABlog, where, many times I've given specific analysis of why I think this team deserves a better coordinator. I know that people who get on here an anonymously call me names have not (nor are they going to) read everything I have ever written about Bobo. Those who know me have heard my criticism of Bobo's Gameday coaching for 4 years. Those people also know that Mike Bobo is my 3rd favorite UGA quarterback of all time.

As far as "fault" is concerned, where have I ever said that it was Bobo's fault that we lost. I know why we lost to LSU. They were a much more well-rounded football team that didn't make mistakes or drop touchdown passes.

What I do believe about the SECCG is this: the offensive game plan too a drastic turn late in the first half. At one point, there were 4 straight possessions where we ran it between the tackles on 1st & 2nd down, only to get stuffed and then put Murray's head on a platter on 3rd and long against a pissed off defense full of future NFLers. We had them on the ropes the whole first half, then the script ran out, Bobo got nervous and saw that our defense was playing lights out....then, The Shit Hit The Fan. The only chance in hell the Dawgs had at winning that game was to play balls out on offense until our defense had the game in hand. After our offense and special teams wet the bed, the defense said WTF!

    ReplyDelete
  46. PS, my respect for Saban as a person is suspect at best. As a coach, yes.

    ReplyDelete
  47. Mr. Coleman,
Thank you for taking the time to fully explain your qualms. Those sound like legit concerns with the game plan and play calling and gives us readers a better picture of your opinion. I am not sure we were going to win without having some kind of run game. You cannot be one dimensional on offense and expect to beat LSU. Bobo was at least trying to keep them honest with attempting to establish a run game.

I agree with you that some of the calls on 3rd and long were very poor, expecially the one that forced Butler to punt out of the back of the endzone -> punt return for TD.

I think most of the anger directed at this article has more to do with the title of the post. Dawgnation should be happy with the results of this season and we have a great nucleus expected back for next year. The future is bright with Richt, Bobo, and especially Grantham. As always, GATA.

  50. Andy-
You talk about coaching both football and baseball. You said you enjoyed football better because you could have a greater impact on the game. I will agree to disagree with you on that point. This is what I mean. How many ground balls have you taken? Did you still kick a one from time to time? How much BP did you take? Did you bat a .1000? You say you didn’t blame anyone but yourself. In both sports you depend on everyone as a TEAM to execute their role. Execution from the Pitcher to the infielder making the play. It’s just more obvious to the “ couch humpers” (NOT YOU) who didn’t execute in Baseball. Football being the ultimate TEAM game, one person can miss their assignment and a well call played is stuffed. (IE) Did you see their backside 5 techniques blowing across our tackle and disrupting the POWER and ISO. Did you see Orson wide open on the wheel route for 6? Drops? Missed tackles on special teams? They didn’t do anything special on “D” because they could line up in 2 deep zone and man under and whip us!! This is an up-front league, you know this and their 5 were better than our 5. In my opinion it was just a matter of time. Even if we did go out 21-0 in 1st half. Bill Walsh could have been calling plays and it doesn’t change the outcome. Ask Bobby P. at ARK? You say you respect Saban at Bama right? I will give you a little story…When BAMA’s OC was testing the market for his worth, Saban called Kirby in his office and asked if he thought Mike would be interested in the OC job at BAMA……so when Kirby comes to visit about the DC job it wasn’t necessarily to talk about him coming to UGA. It was just as much Kirby getting a temperature check on Mike leaving UGA.

    ReplyDelete
  51. DJ,

I agree with what your saying, but I was speaking more from a coaching standpoint than a players. As a coach, I can't help it as much if my SS boots a grounder, but I can make sure my reciever correctly runs a curl instead of incorrectly running an out on a certain play.

It may just be a difference of thought here, so I am in no way saying you are wrong for your analogy.

Go read my new post and see if I explain myself any better on there. It's really a joy going back and forth with legitimate fans like you!

PS, I would be shocked if someone like Saban really went after Bobo unless it is true that Bobo is under control of Richt and would be much more effective as a play caller if the reigns came off. Not saying I believe any of that, but its a thought!
