So He Grabbed A Boob, Really?

First of all, Zach Mettenberger, shame on you.

-You're the quarterback of a major college football program, and you can't have fun without getting arrested in public; Really?

-Hell, forget getting arrested! You're not a bad looking kid, and I know there are plenty of girls that would willingly let you grab a boob.

I really do not want to make light of a serious situation, so I'll give my opinion, and then hopefully be done with this mess. At least for a while. He NEVER should have touched someone inappropriately. He NEVER should have lied. Lying is most likely what ultimately got him kicked to the curb. I feel for the kid because it was a stupid drunken mistake that he probably would never do sober. Last, how many guys do you think are sitting on Division I football teams that grabbed a girls boob or butt before asking? And those guys will not get in one ounce of trouble unless it comes to light.

Food for thought: before the rest of you Dawgs go and do something stupid, think to yourself; Really?

My Favorite Spring Topics So Far

I am starting to get a quite a bit anxious about April 10th! I haven't even watched any replays of football since the Superbowl, and it is past time for some football! Today I just want to take a few minutes to look at some of the topics that have really caught my attention during the first third of spring football practice in Athens.

5). The atmosphere that has been set up by the new coaches seems electric. Granted, I haven't been to any practices, but Hale and the likes are keeping me very well informed!

4). Is Jakar Hamilton going to be the real deal? I have been on the Hamilton bandwagon for some time now, and I was surprised to see that he is still working in with the second and third team at practice. This may be just for the shear fact that he is new to the program, but who knows. I even wondered if there had been any consideration of giving him some reps at corner since we are THIN!

3). How much confusion will there be for the guys that have no experience in the 3-4? At the end of the day, the goal is still the same, right? Stop the offense from advancing the ball by being in position and tackling with good form. How quickly can we have our guys in position most of the time? That is what I worry about!

2). We all want to know who the starting QB will be, but along those same lines...will Aaron Murray do as well as Tom Brady wearing that pretty glove?

1). And, the number one thing that has me all in a tizzy this spring in Athens....where in the hell am I going to tailgate next season?

Would You Rather, Spring Practice Edition

Since spring practice is in full bloom right now, I thought I would take one of my "Would You Rather" posts and try to relate it to spring practice. So...

Would you rather...

1) Have Mett split reps at QB this spring, or go ahead and face the fact that the whole arrest thing has eliminated him from the race?
Let's go ahead and let the best QB get his reps!

2) Have Logan Gray go ahead and start learning the WR position full time, or continue to fight it out at QB?
Something tells me that Gray might make one heck of a receiver if he can catch.

3) Run the 3-4 on defense, or the 4-3?
I'm excited as all get out to see what this kill the QB 3-4 is going to do!

4) Have Kirby Smart at DC, or Grantham?
I was a big advocate of Smart, but I think we made a smart choice with Grantham!

5) Have Mark Richt take over the special teams, or keep it as it is?
Why not bring our on version of Beamerball to the Dawgs?

Aaron Murray, Behave Yourself!

Did Zack Mettenberger screw up this past weekend? (story here) Yes. Does he deserve a second chance? Most definitely. Should he be bumped to an automatic 3rd spot on the QB depth chart? Probably.

All that being said, I think this unfortunate event puts a nail in the coffin for this quarterback race--at least for the start of the 2010 season. Not only is Mett going to be suspended for at least the first game of the season, but he's now shown that he may not have the poise to run the show in Athens next season. I mean, why would you ever give a cop your fake ID, much less a second fake ID after the first one didn't work! I know, I know, I don't know all of the circumstances surrounding this incident. I do know that I have been in similar situations about a hundred times in my life. Dude, fess up and take your underage consumption ticket! Instead, you are now facing five counts!

OK, my whole point of today's post is to mention something my co-worker and I were discussing this morning over a cup of coffee. "You can't have your quarterback, the leader of your team, getting into these types of situations"! You sort of expect stuff like this from a D-lineman, or defensive back, right? LOL...Those guys are head-hunter type, pure athletes that have a sole purpose in life to stop the other team from moving down the field in a positive direction. I'm not saying that all defensive guys are dumb, because they are NOT, but they don't exactly have to act strategically as would say...a QUARTERBACK!

I know Mettenberger just got caught for something that 99% of us have done at some point in our life, but the kid is on a different stage than 99% of us were at the time. So, Mr. Mett, I say to you, "Good luck making the #2 spot on the depth chart, and if you really are the better player, overtake Murray at some point in your career.

GO DAWGS!

QBs Split Snaps Evenly...MISTAKE

So, after reading every piece of news made available about UGA's first day of spring practice yesterday, it has been made pretty apparent that the 3 quarterbacks are going to split practice snaps evenly throughout the spring. I will give Richt and Bobo the benefit of the doubt for at least 3-4 practices, but after that, they need to lean towards a starter.

I know that this post is a reiteration of the one from yesterday, but hopefully Mark Richt will read this. PICK A MAN FOR THE JOB ASAP. None of the guys have ever started a college football game! The starter needs as many reps as humanly possible, and that AIN'T GONNA HAPPEN if three guys are splitting time evenly!

UGA Should Decide QB ASAP

The fact that there is a quarterback battle of any kind could be seen as a good sign, especially from optimistic Dawg fans. I, for one, am glad that we seem to have some formidable options this year unlike last. Without the arm injury, I firmly believe Murray would have been our guy after the third or fourth game of the season in 2009.

That last comment is one of the main reasons I believe this quarterback battle may be getting a little over hyped by the media and blogosphere. I tried to ride the fence for most of the off season, but I have come to the conclusion that I am a blogger, and not a reporter; therefore, I am obligated to spout at the mouth about who I feel should get the nod. From reading thousands of articles, blogs, reports, and watching hundreds of videos and live action, this whole "battle" seems like a no-brainer. Aaron Murray is our man.

I could go on and on like many have, but I am going to give my top 5 reasons that UGA should go ahead and let the world know that Aaron Murray is the next coming:

1.) He's flat out better at the position than the other two. I saw Mettenberger play every game from his high school senior year, and I saw nothing special other than a BIG arm. He may develop into an SEC caliber QB one day, so don't get me wrong. Gray, while not given much of a chance, did NOTHING to show he should be the man last year.

2.) Aaron Murray did things in high school that only pure winners do on the football field. The miraculous recovery from a broken leg, ridiculous stats, poise beyond his years...need I say more? Heck, just watching him warm up with the other guys during the Tennessee Tech game last year showed me he is much better than his competition.

3.) It's time to make Logan Gray face the fact that he can help this team in other areas. I think Gray has the potential to be a great possession type receiver. Wouldn't it be sweet to have our very own shorter version of an Ed McCaffrey type play-maker?

4.) The whole "this guy has paid his dues thing" hasn't really panned out for Georgia as far as QBs are concerned, now has it? Joe T and Joe C may have been great guys and all, but...

5.) And, the most important reason that I think the UGA coaching staff should go ahead and end the drama as soon as possible is so that Aaron Murray can go ahead and become the leader of this team.


Now, I very well could be wrong, Murray may not be the best option. If that's the case, then let's make whoever the man is, THE MAN ASAP!

Go Dawgs, I can't wait to see who starts as the leader of The Decade Of The Dawg!

Georgia Bulldog QB With 3 Heads?

Last night I had a strange vision, and not one that I necessarily agree with, but a vision none-the-less. The vision was of a UGA football team with multiple options playing at the QB position next season.

I will boldly admit that I am a card carrying member of the Aaron Murray fan club. That being said, I will be a true Dawg fan and support the best man for the job in 2010 as decided by the coaching staff. But, what if the best man is really the best "men" for the job? Steve Spurrier had undeniable success at Florida switching QBs whenever he felt like it. I remember watching a game during the Spurrier regime where Florida was running plays into the huddle from the sideline using different QB.

I'm not saying that Georgia should play schizophrenic offense like Spurrier has been known to do. I'm just thinking; wouldn't it be pretty tough to design a defensive game plan around 2 or 3 different QBs at UGA with all completely different styles of play? We all know that Georgia will be a run oriented offense next season, so hopefully the waterboy can line up under center and we can still be successful.

Vision In Action:

Mettenberger as the pro style QB that throws the ball all over the field!
Gray lining up in the WildDawg; will he run, will he throw, we don't know!
Murray just beating you with his uncanny ability to just make plays!

Either way, it is the Decade of the Dawg baby!

MMMove over Joe Cox!

Thank you Mr. Cox for your dutiful service to the University of Georgia football program. Your time and commitment to the Dawgnation is greatly appreciated by "most" of the faithful UGA fans. However, faithful as we may be, we cannot wait to see what one of the MMM crew has to offer after Cox's not so pretty senior campaign (I hope you're a better coach than field general).

Mason, Mettenberger, or Murray will most likely line up under center next fall when the "Decade of the Dawg" begins in 2010. I'm not going to completely rule out Logan Gray as the starter for next year, but preliminary indications are that it ain't gonna happen.

I want to take a short time today to introduce these guys because I will most likely be writing a lot about one or more of them in the future. Due diligence is the goal for this write up here today. Those of you that know me probably already know my pick for the next QB at Georgia. If I step back and take a realistic approach to who should be our next QB, I don't have much to go on seeing as how I am not at practice every day watching the production of any of these guys. Come to think of it, I am never at a UGA practice anymore (man do I miss being in Athens).
